Confessions of a Wedding Photographer: How to Prepare for Your Engagement Session!

Hey friends!

I know that being in front of a camera can make you nervous, so I’m here to help put your mind at ease. Whether you are already getting hitched or you think the big question, may come soon, these tips will help you prepare for your engagement session and ensure a stress-free, fun filled photoshoot!

1. You don’t have to know what you’re doing!

Don’t worry about looking awkward! Trust your photographer and trust what they are saying! Your photographer will give you plenty of direction, posing, and encouragement to make sure you get images that you are MORE than pleased with! Don’t be afraid of spontaneous moments!

2. Bring props (or animals!) that are special to your relationship!

It is always fun to bring something that is a special item in your relationship! Whether it’s a bottle of champagne that was given to you on the day you were engaged, your puppy that you got together, or even have your florist put together a bouquet for you! There are so many options.

3. Wear something you’re comfortable in!

When you’re choosing what you want to wear for your session, make sure these are things you know you feel and look GOOD in! You would hate to get to the session and not feel good about what you’re wearing. So.. Don’t overthink it! People notice your happy smiles and your love for one another, WAYYY over an outfit!

If you are one of my clients, feel free to send me pictures of what you and your Boo are wearing! I’m more than happy to help in any way I can!

For example, I loved the way Meredith and Taylor coordinated their colors without going to overboard. They also picked outfits that match WHO THEY ARE! Always be true to yourself!

4. BE PRESENT!

While at your session, focus on being present with your partner. Enjoy each other’s company and this super exciting time in your life. If saying it’s a “photo shoot”, think of it as a date…. with a third wheel! Flirt with each other, flirt with the camera! If it feels funny, it probably looks great, honestly! And when in doubt, KISS!

5. Think of it as a Date!

Make a day out of your engagement session. Whether you’re traveling for it or staying local, go on a date! You’re getting your makeup and hair did, you’re getting all dressed up, you’re spending an hour or more flirting and loving on each other, so why not keep it going?! Celebrate this time in your lie and cherish every moment, because before you know it, it’ll all be over!

Probably one of my top tips….

6. Be on time!

I am a natural-light photographer, so the sun dictates how long I can photograph you, which is the same for many other photographers out there. Please make proper considerations for traffic, delays, and fashion emergencies! An average shoot lasts 1-1.5 hours.

7. Feel your best!

Book a professional appointment to get your hair and makeup done. This is a perfect time to do a trial run with your wedding makeup artist if you already have one booked! If you need help finding an artist in the area, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help. If you choose to have hair and makeup done, please make your appointment ASAP since their schedules get booked up quickly with weddings, proms and senior sessions.

I hope you enjoyed this post and you got what you were looking for! Your engagement photos will mean so much to you when you get them back and will always have something to look back on in your happiest times! Don’t worry about doing things the right way. Pretend the photographer is not there and GO FOR IT! Be your goofy self, say things to make each other life, sweep her off her feet!
